Efficient shift scheduling in the retail sector through two-stage optimization
نویسندگان
چکیده
Efficient workforce scheduling has an important impact on store profit and customer service. Standard scheduling problems do not recognize the effect of staff availability on customer sales, however, even though the latter is an important factor in the retail sector. In this paper a two-stage model is proposed for this purpose. In the first stage a sales response model is used to specify hourly staff requirements. The output of the sales response model is then used as the input of a mixed integer optimization model, which finds an optimum assignment of the staff to daily shifts. Simulations are used to validate the sales response function, and to revise the model for more accurate results. In the simulations, customer arrivals and sales response error values are generated using appropriate distribution functions. As a case study the proposed model is applied to a Turkish retailer in the apparel sector. 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multi-objective Solution Approaches for Employee Shift Scheduling Problems in Service Sectors (RESEARCH NOTE)
Today, workforce scheduling programs are being implemented in many production and service centers. These sectors can provide better quality products and/or services to their customers, taking into account employees’ desires and preferences in order to increase sector productivity. In this study, an employee shift scheduling problem in the service sector is discussed. In the problem, the aim is ...
متن کاملParticle swarm optimization for minimizing total earliness/tardiness costs of two-stage assembly flowshop scheduling problem in a batched delivery system
This paper considers a two-stage assembly flow shop scheduling problem. When all parts of each product are completed in the first stage, they are assembled into a final product on an assembly machine in the second stage. In order to reduce the delivery cost, completed products can be held until completion of some other products to be delivered in a same batch. The proposed problem addresses sch...

This paper considers a two-stage assembly flow shop problem (TAFSP) where m machines are in the first stage and an assembly machine is in the second stage. The objective is to minimize a weighted sum of earliness and tardiness time for n available jobs. JIT seeks to identify and eliminate waste components including over production, waiting time, transportation, inventory, movement and defective...
متن کاملOperating Room Scheduling in Teaching Hospitals: A Novel Stochastic Optimization Model
Background and Objectives: Operating room (OR) scheduling is key to optimal operating room productivity. The significant uncertainty associated with surgery duration renders scheduling of surgical operation a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel computational stochastic model to optimize scheduling of surgeries with uncertain durations. The model considers various surgical operation co...
متن کاملOptimization of the Microgrid Scheduling with Considering Contingencies in an Uncertainty Environment
In this paper, a stochastic two-stage model is offered for optimization of the day-ahead scheduling of the microgrid. System uncertainties including dispatchable distributed generation and energy storage contingencies are considered in the stochastic model. For handling uncertainties, Monte Carlo simulation is employed for generation several scenarios and then a reduction method is used to decr...
